My good friend, Dave Hingsburger, (the wonderful namesake for my/this blog) has had his own blog with a “disabled focus” for far more many years than I, and sometimes reading his posts gives me flashbacks of life as a disabled person in TO, and how different it is in the Maritimes, at least for me anyway.
As a reaction to his post “Another Gift” (December 19, 2018) I found myself recalling this story and shared it on his Facebook page. After seeing how well it spontaneously wrote itself, I decided to repost it on my blog. Here it is:
“Hi Dave Hingsburger!… Here, 99% of my encounters with the public are extremely positive.
A funny story:
Several years ago, my now ex and I were out running the streets. I had recently got my first power chair and I was enjoying my new independence again. He wanted to get to Giant Tiger quickly. (I forget why.) So, we agreed for him to speed ahead. In doing so, he reached into my bag and grabbed our recycled cloth bags. As he quickly walked off, this car pulled up beside him. The female passenger rolled down her window and very sternly yelled “What the hell are you doing??? Did YOU just take something out of that lady’s bag???!!!” By this time, I had caught up to my ex. We explained that we were married and that I agreed for him to do what he did. The couple in the car both apologized, repeatedly, but we told them n-e-v-e-r apologize for being so caring.”
